Santa Monica, CA -- Santa Monica and Malibu Unified School District Board Member Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica) was endorsed tonight by the Stonewall Democratic Club in his bid for California’s 26th State Senate District.
“Ben Allen has been a true progressive his entire life and it’s shown both in his record as a public servant and in his campaign for the State Senate. He’s also been a true champion for LGBT Civil Rights. He was just the natural choice for us here at the Stonewall Democratic Club,” said Stephen David Simon, President of the Stonewall Democratic Club.
“As a School Board Member, Ben Allen always supported our Gay Straight Alliance and students like myself,” said Ruhi Bhalla, an alumnus of Santa Monica High School. “Ben Allen always went above and beyond to make sure that all LGBTQ students felt safe at my high school. When talking to Ben, his passion, love, and dedication for social justice shines. Ben Allen will be a great advocate for equality and human rights in the State Senate.”
“The Stonewall Democratic Club is more than just a Democratic Club. They were one of the first Democratic Clubs founded to advance LGBT Civil Rights and dedicated to a progressive agenda. More than just elect Democrats, the Stonewall Democratic Club has been focused on enacting progressive public policy. I am really proud to have received their endorsement,” said Ben Allen.
The Stonewall Democratic Club was founded in 1975 for progressive Democrats in Los Angeles who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and straight allies. The club has been the home to numerous prominent elected officials and has been active in both electoral politics and lobbying for laws and regulations that advance LGBT Civil Rights.
The Stonewall Democratic Club is the first Democratic Club to make an endorsement after the June 3rd California Primary. With their endorsement, the Stonewall Democratic Club joins a growing number of local Democratic club endorsements for Allen including the Santa Monica Democratic Club, the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club, the Miracle Mile Democratic Club, the Los Angeles County Young Democrats, the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Los Angeles Chapter of Democrats for Israel, and the West Hollywood/Beverly Hills Democratic Club.
Ben Allen placed first among a crowded field in the open primary for the 26th State Senate District, held on June 3, 2014. He will face Sandra Fluke in a November runoff.
The 26th State Senate District consists of the cities of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, El Segundo, Avalon, Lomita, Torrance, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills; the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Westchester, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Westwood, Westwood Village, Bel Air, Holmby Hills, Little Holmby, Sunset Hills, Beverly Grove, Mar Vista, Mid City West, Miracle Mile, Larchmont Village, Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Fairfax, Carthay, Fremont Place, Hancock Park, and Windsor Square; and the unincorporated Los Angeles County communities of Marina Del Rey, San Clemente Island, Santa Catalina Island, Franklin, Centinela, and Ocean View.
