Santa Monica, CA -- Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School Board Member Ben Allen has earned the endorsement of former U.S. Congressman Anthony Beilenson, in his campaign for the 26th State Senate District.
“Ben Allen has deeply impressed me as a candidate. He has the intelligence, integrity, and the track record in local and state government to be a leader in the State Senate. I see reflections of my younger self in Ben's passion for open space preservation. I predict Ben will do big things in office, and I am happy to endorse him," said Congressman Anthony Beilenson.
“This is a deeply touching endorsement for me, as Congressman Beilenson is truly my political hero and one of my role models. Among his many accomplishments, he created the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area that preserved valuable open space in Southern California," said Ben Allen. "Growing up in Santa Monica as a kid, I went hiking in those mountains nearly every weekend, and I’m grateful to Congressman Beilenson for making that possible. I’m running for office because I hope to create the same kinds of opportunities for others like he created for me."
First elected to Congress in 1976, Congressman Anthony Beilenson served for two decades, representing the West Los Angeles area, as well as Beverly Hills and Malibu. During his distinguished career, he wrote and shepherded through legislation that led to the preservation of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area and the Channel Islands National Park, in addition to serving as Chair of the Intelligence Committee. Prior to his time in Congress, Beilenson served in the California State Senate from 1966 through 1976, and the California State Assembly from 1963 through 1966. In the California State Legislature, Beilenson was known for authoring laws and legalizing abortion and contraception.
With his endorsement, Beilenson joins a long list of well-respected elected officials who are backing Allen for State Senate, including former U.S. Representatives Howard Berman and Mel Levine; Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky; former Los Angeles County Supervisor Ed Edelman; State Senators Fran Pavley and Jerry Hill; former State Senators Tom Hayden and Alan Sieroty; Assemblymembers Richard Bloom, Steven Bradford, Ian Calderon, Isadore Hall, III, and Adrin Nazarian; former Assemblymembers Terry Friedman, Warren Furutani, Richard Katz, Tony Mendoza, and George Nakano; and Los Angeles City Councilmembers Paul Koretz, Paul Krekorian, and Tom Labonge.
