Former Los Angeles County Supervisor and Los Angeles City Councilman Ed Edelman Endorses Ben Allen

Santa Monica, CA -- In his quest for California's 26th State Senate District, Santa Monica and Malibu Unified School District Board Member Ben Allen has earned the endorsement of former Los Angeles County Supervisor Ed Edelman and his wife, Mari Edelman.

On behalf of her husband of 46 years, Mari Edelman said, “Ben Allen is the type of energetic leader we need in Sacramento. We have both admired his commitment to education and public service. He is a dedicated, bright leader who is committed to solving the problems of today so our children can have a brighter tomorrow.”

“I am deeply honored to have the support of a well-respected leader like Supervisor Edelman who is one of my political heroes and role models,” said Allen. “He has worked tirelessly to protect the rights of the disabled, neglected and abused children, and victims of substance abuse, and his pioneering work has set a benchmark for elected officials. I look forward to continuing his legacy of serving the disenfranchised in Sacramento.”

Edelman was first elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1965, quickly ushering in a new era of liberal change in West Los Angeles as he led battles against racial profiling, discrimination against LGBT citizens, environmental degradation, and overdevelopment.  In 1974, he was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, where he served for two decades as a leader, widely respected by his colleagues, both on the left and the right.

As a Supervisor, Edelman was responsible for creating the Los Angeles County’s Commission on Disability and the commission to oversee the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department.   He was successful in securing the funds to renovate the Hollywood Bowl and build the Disney Music Hall.  An advocate of the Red Line Subway, he was a key figure in the initial construction of what is LA’s current Metrorail system.  He is perhaps most well-known for his work supporting neglected and abused children and initiating the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.  Considered a liberal icon, he was recently the subject of a Tom Brokaw narrated PBS documentary produced by his wife, Mari, the Passion and Politics of Ed Edelman.

In endorsing Allen, Edelman joins several prominent elected officials across the district who are backing Allen including County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, West Hollywood Mayor Heilman, former Assemblyman Terry Friedman, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, former State Senator Tom Hayden, and former State Senator Alan Sieroty.
