Santa Monica, CA -- In his bid to represent California's 26th State Senate District, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board Member Ben Allen has earned the endorsement of Los Angeles area local unions of the the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts (IATSE), which represents studio grips, set medics, warehouse workers, and other vital motion picture support workers.
With its full-voiced endorsement, IATSE re-enforces Ben’s reputation as a budding legislative leader in issues of entertainment policy. “Throughout this process, Ben has consistently proven himself to be the more engaged, informed, and able candidate in this race. We in the union look forward to working with him to ensure a golden future for film here in California,” said Thomas Davis, Local 80’s Business Representative and current International Vice President of IATSE.
Allen has also been endorsed by former State Senate District 26 candidate Barbi Appelquist, an accomplished lawyer who made film/television production tax credits her chief issue in the primary. “Ben Allen has a comprehensive and nuanced grasp of the entertainment industry's concerns. Ben, born and raised in L.A., is the candidate who understands how integral this industry is to our history, economy, and culture. He is the best person to work with legislators across the state to keep film and television in California," said Appelquist.
"To have the backing of the IATSE locals is truly an honor. I will work closely with industry executives, union leaders, and community advocates to shape a comprehensive package of protections, incentives, and modernizations for industry workers," said Allen. "I am in full support of the film and TV production tax credit, and look forward to leading further legislative actions to halt runaway production and ensure intellectual property rights as the region’s State Senator."
For over 120 years, IATSE has represented members working in all forms of live theater, motion picture, and television, broadcasting, exhibitions, and support shops. While membership in other unions has declined in recent decades, IATSE membership has grown, coming to encompass nearly all workers in its industry with their membership at 119,000. In this way, IATSE brings artists, technicians, service workers, medics, and skilled workers of all stripes together in a diverse union which remains one of the most prominent in Los Angeles.
With its unanimous endorsement, IATSE joins a growing list of local unions and labor groups in support of Ben Allen. Ben Allen placed first among a crowded field in the open primary for the 26th State Senate District, held on June 3, 2014.
